Pope Leo XIV Marks Birthday With Giant JR Wave on Vatican Library
Pope Leo XIV marked his birthday on 16 September 2026 with a giant wave across the front of his library.
French artist JR covered the facade of the Vatican Apostolic Library in Vatican City with DILUVIUM, a towering black-and-white wave nearly 70 metres (230 feet) wide, as reported by ARTnews. It is hard to miss.
The work is an installation, a piece made for a specific site. It runs across the front of the library's 16th-century building. Vatican News said the image speaks to the fragility of knowledge and memory, with water as a force that can preserve and destroy.
DILUVIUM opens the library's exhibition on water. The show, listed in German as Wasser: Katastrophe und Wunder, is the first in a planned five-year cycle of exhibitions, according to Vatican News. Pope Leo XIV visited the library ahead of the opening and was due to inaugurate the exhibition.
The scale is part of the story.
