Vincent Grashaw returns to Oldenburg with prison drama Bruton

Winning an award at Oldenburg means working the bar at the closing-night party.

That is how director Vincent Grashaw described his most memorable moment at the Oldenburg Film Festival, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published on 16 September 2026. Award winners are expected to bartend, he said. He tended bar.

Grashaw was speaking during his third year in a row at the festival. He had brought two earlier features to Oldenburg before this visit.

Those films were Bang Bang, starring Tim Blake Nelson as a washed-up former boxer, and Keep Quiet, a crime thriller starring Lou Diamond Phillips. Keep Quiet won the 2025 Spirit of Cinema Award at Oldenburg, Grashaw told The Hollywood Reporter.

This year he returned with Bruton, a prison drama starring Theo Rossi. The story was inspired by Bryan Bruton, a real-life criminal from Jacksonville. The Oldenburg International Film Festival lists Bruton as a 2026 film from the United States and describes it as a filmic picaresque tale directed by Grashaw.

Grashaw called Oldenburg “the jewel of film festivals”. He said the festival curates its programme around film-makers rather than red carpets. He credited Festival Director Torsten Neumann with setting that tone.

Asked to name another film he remembered seeing there, he picked Baby Brother by Michael J. Long, which he saw at Oldenburg in 2024. That film later won the Hans Ohlms Award for best first feature.

What makes this stand out for regular film fans is the small scale. Grashaw’s favourite food memory was not a gala dinner. It was a meal at a farmhouse in the countryside, where a chef cooks for festival guests.

Oldenburg has become a fixed stop for him. Three years, three films, and one shift behind the bar.
