Jersey target ODI status and World Cup place by 2029
Jersey want their men's team back in official one-day internationals and chasing a World Cup place within three years.
The target sits at the heart of Jersey Cricket's new strategic plan, which runs to 2029. Chief executive Sarah Gomersall said the island is aiming for One-Day International status, where 50-over matches count as full internationals, and qualification for a global tournament BBC Sport.
The plan covers 2026 to 2029 and lists seven priorities for delivering excellence across the game, from grassroots to the senior sides Island FM.
The immediate test is close. Jersey's men travel to Kenya for the final round of ICC Challenge League A, the qualifying league that feeds into 50-over World Cup qualification. They lead the table with five games left to play.
Finish in the top two and Jersey go through to the 2027 Cricket World Cup qualifier play-off. That is the gateway event. A strong showing there brings ODI status. Finish in the top four there and Jersey reach the final round of qualifying for the Cricket World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
It is a steep climb for a small island. Jersey's men are ranked 29th in the world in T20 internationals, the shortest format, while Jersey's women are 32nd. The pathway can produce top-level players, though. Batter Asa Tribe came through Jersey's system before joining Glamorgan and the England Lions.
Jersey have touched this level before. They won the Challenge League and held ODI status in 2023 after moving into the next stage of 50-over World Cup qualifying BBC Sport. In the T20 route, they have repeatedly reached the final stages of European qualifying without breaking through to the main event, including defeats in Scotland in 2023 that ended their bid for the 2024 T20 World Cup.
For fans, this means every game in Kenya carries double weight. Win, and the table-topping position turns into a play-off place. Slip, and the three-year plan gets harder before it has properly started.
Jersey have already secured an early place in the next ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier alongside Portugal ICC. The 50-over route is now the focus. Kenya will show how realistic that World Cup dream is.
