Leicestershire all but relegated after 27-point pitch penalty
Leicestershire are all but relegated from Division One after losing 27 points over a poor pitch. The deduction has left them bottom of the table, 38 points adrift of safety.
The Cricket Regulator charged the club after the Grace Road surface for last month’s win over Glamorgan was rated poor, meaning it was judged below the standard required for first-class cricket. A Discipline Panel upheld the charge, according to live reporting on 17 September 2026 The Guardian.
Leicestershire lost the 19 points earned for that victory, plus a further eight points as punishment. That makes 27 in total. The panel also imposed a £5,000 fine.
The club confirmed the overall 27-point loss in a ‘Club Statement: Glamorgan Pitch’ published on its official website on 16 September Leicestershire County Cricket Club. Leicestershire said it is reviewing its position and considering all available options. The ECB also published its own notice titled ‘Leicestershire deducted points following breach of ECB Pitch Regulations’ ECB.
Relegation here means the drop from Division One, the top tier of the County Championship, to Division Two. With so large a gap to the last safe spot, Leicestershire need results elsewhere to go heavily in their favour. They have almost no margin left.
The punishment landed in the middle of another tough week on the field. At Grace Road on day three against Hampshire, Leicestershire made 244 in reply to Hampshire’s 214. Hampshire then reached 255 for three in their second innings, a lead of 225 with seven wickets still standing.
The Glamorgan game at the centre of the case was also a Division One match. Leicestershire set the visitors 257 to win on the final day, and Glamorgan were bowled out for 214 BBC Sport. It was that win, and the state of the pitch it was played on, that brought the charge.
For fans, this means the table tells two stories at once. One is about runs and wickets. The other is about points in the committee room, and right now the second story is deciding Leicestershire’s season.
