Leeds tear through Newcastle as Jaissle suffers first defeat
Leeds United thrashed Newcastle United 4-1 at Elland Road on Monday, 14 September, to climb to third in the Premier League.
It was Newcastle's first defeat under Matthias Jaissle. It was also their heaviest of the season so far. Leeds were faster, stronger and sharper from the first whistle.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored twice for Leeds. His second, in the 34th minute, was later officially confirmed as his goal after a question over a deflection Leeds United.
Jayden Bogle also scored in the win and was later voted Player of the Match by supporters Leeds United. Noah Okafor added the other Leeds goal, while El Bilal Touré netted Newcastle's consolation.
Newcastle never got to grips with the pace of the night. They lost 56% of their duels in the first half. A duel is a one-v-one battle for the ball, and Leeds won most of them.
The evening got worse in the 19th minute when midfielder Nico Gonzalez went off with concussion. Jaissle was blunt afterwards about the opening period, criticising his side's inability to match Leeds for intensity, physicality and competitiveness.
He was even more forthright behind closed doors. Players had already seen an unhappy Jaissle on the training ground in the opening weeks of his reign, and the away dressing room at Elland Road was no different after this defeat BBC Sport.
"There was all clarity in the room that the learning curve needs to be really fast," Jaissle said.
The context is a team in flux. Eddie Howe stepped down as head coach before Jaissle was appointed only three weeks before the season started. Newcastle have gone from one of the oldest starting sides in the league last season to the second-youngest this season.
Injuries have stripped away experience. Dan Burn, Joelinton, Anthony Elanga and William Osula were all sidelined in the early weeks. The numbers show a defence under pressure, with Newcastle facing 76 shots in the opening weeks, more than any other Premier League side.
There was a warning sign earlier in the month. Newcastle were 2-0 down to Bournemouth after 35 minutes at St James' Park before fighting back for a draw. At Leeds there was no recovery.
What makes this stand out is how quickly the mood has shifted from promise to pressure. Jaissle is unbeaten no longer. His young squad must now show they can take a hard lesson and respond.
The chance comes fast. Newcastle were scheduled to face Hull City on Saturday after the Leeds defeat. For fans travelling, it is simple. A response, and this Monday night becomes a blip. Another slow start, and the questions grow louder.
