The Ex Vows heads to screen as Pitt Street takes film rights
Pitt Street Productions has bought the feature film rights to Jessica Joyce's 2024 romance novel The Ex Vows and plans to assemble a screen version imminently, Deadline reported on 17 September.
The deal is for a full-length cinema adaptation. The next step is packaging, industry shorthand for attaching a writer, director and cast before taking a project to buyers.
The story follows two estranged exes who call a truce to rescue their best friend's chaotic wedding. Stuck together for nine days at a picturesque winery, they have to relive what split them. Publisher Penguin Random House bills it as a swoony and steamy second-chance romance, meaning a love story in which a former couple get another try.
The book pedigree is strong. The Ex Vows was published by Berkley, an imprint of Penguin Random House, and became an instant USA Today bestseller, according to Deadline. It also broke out on BookTok, the corner of TikTok where short video recommendations can drive print sales.
Pitt Street knows this territory. The company was founded by Brian Pitt, whose credits include producing the After films based on Anna Todd's novels and the Beautiful Disaster films based on Jamie McGuire's New Adult romances. Its slate also includes the teen romance See You On Venus, starring Virginia Gardner and Alex Aiono, and Amazon's The Last Sunrise, based on another Todd novel, made alongside Luber Roklin Entertainment and Ethea Entertainment.
Joyce is no one-book author. Her other novels include You with a View, A Risk Worth Taking, Twelve Loves of Christmas and Every Ordinary Thing. She is represented by Subtext Literary Management and InkWell Management.
What makes this stand out is fit. Pitt Street has made a favourite hunting ground of page-to-screen romance with an established online readership. Nine days. One winery. Two exes. That is the whole pitch, and now it has a producer.
