Injury sub Potts hits fifty as Derbyshire set Northants 349

Nick Potts arrived as an injury replacement and finished as Derbyshire's day-maker. His maiden half-century of 57 helped set Northamptonshire 349 to win the County Championship Division Two match at Wantage Road in Northampton BBC Sport.

Derbyshire made 372 and 286 in their two innings. Northamptonshire replied with 310 first time around. That left the visitors in front and with time to push for victory on the final day.

Potts was drafted into the side during the match as cover for Ben Aitchison. He made 57. It was his first fifty in first-class cricket, the long form of the game played over up to four days.

He shared 99 for the eighth wicket with Brett Randell. Randell scored 45. The stand lifted Derbyshire from a fragile position to one of real strength.

Martin Andersson also weighed in with 62 for Derbyshire. Liam Guthrie took 3-61 for Northamptonshire. Calvin Harrison took 3-74.

At the close of day three, Northamptonshire were 37-0 in their second innings. Ricardo Vasconcelos was 21 not out, meaning unbeaten, and Luke Procter was 16 not out. They trail by 311 runs with all 10 wickets standing going into the final day BBC Sport.

The equation is simple. Northamptonshire must chase 349 in the fourth innings, batting last. That would be a county record chase against Derbyshire.

There is plenty riding on it. Northamptonshire need victory to retake second place from promotion rivals Kent going into the final round of fixtures.

What makes this stand out is the route Potts took. Few players enter a match late and shape it with the bat. He did that, then left his side with a total to defend and a day to bowl at it.
