Pilots reported 4,470 laser strikes between January and July 2026, down 24 percent from the same months in 2025, the Federal Aviation Administration reported. A strike means someone on the ground aims a handheld laser at a plane in flight, which can dazzle pilots at night much like a sudden bright headlight. The state numbers differ widely. California recorded 614 reports between January and July 2026, the most of any state, followed by Texas with 445. Adjusted for population, meaning cases per resident rather than total cases, New Mexico and Hawaii had the highest rates over the same period.

Pilots have reported 322 injuries from laser strikes since the FAA started tracking reports in 2010. In its 2026 update, the agency said strikes continue to drop but are still too high. FAA

The law works on two levels. People who shine lasers at aircraft can face FAA civil fines of up to $11,000 per violation, along with federal criminal penalties of up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The broader context here is scale. A 24 percent drop is a real improvement, and about 4,000 reports in seven months still leaves pilots and safety staff with a lot to handle. In safety reporting, those two facts often sit side by side.

In practical terms for flight operations, rates can improve while crews, dispatchers and safety analysts stay busy. Raw totals point to California and Texas, but per-person rates point to New Mexico and Hawaii, which suggests outreach and enforcement need to look beyond totals. Different places may need different local responses.

Looking more closely at enforcement, the two-part penalty system matters. Civil fines allow quicker action tied to a single violation. Criminal cases set a much higher ceiling for serious incidents. That both tools remain in use while reports fall suggests deterrence may be part of the story, though the numbers alone do not prove cause and effect. Steady reporting, pilot awareness and public education likely play a part as well.

In my view, there is reason for measured optimism. Three years of declines after a record peak show that a problem tied to cheap, widely available handheld lasers can be pushed down. That does not mean the risk is gone. It means reporting, awareness and consequences can change behavior over time, which for flights means fewer disrupted approaches, fewer go-arounds and fewer medical checks, even as each remaining event needs the same careful response.

Stepping back, the payoff is not a new sensor or a new airplane. It is fewer interruptions to work that leaves little room for interruption.
