Alexander Isak says Liverpool move was an easy decision
Alexander Isak says joining Liverpool was an "easy decision".
The Sweden striker told the BBC that the club's ambition and its determination to sign him made his mind up. Liverpool, he said, is a massive club and everything about it made the move clear.
Isak joined Liverpool from Newcastle United on transfer deadline day in September 2025, the last day clubs could do business that summer. The fee was £125m, a British record. It was the headline deal in a window when Premier League clubs spent a record £3bn, according to Reuters.
The move followed a messy end at Newcastle. Isak missed pre-season in summer 2025 and trained at his former club Real Sociedad while his future was uncertain. He later said promises made to him at Newcastle had been "broken". Newcastle responded at the time that no club official had ever promised he could leave that summer, and pointed out he was under contract until 2028.
Isak insists he never regretted the switch, even though his first season at Anfield was badly disrupted. He suffered a leg break that ruled him out from December to April. He finished the campaign with 22 appearances and 1,032 minutes.
Summer 2026 brought a reset. Isak made his World Cup debut for Sweden, scoring once and setting up three goals. Sweden, managed by Graham Potter, went out to France in the last 32.
There has also been change at Liverpool. Andoni Iraola replaced Arne Slot as head coach in summer 2026. Isak says Iraola wants him to defend from the front and be an "attacking weapon" — in other words, to start the press high up the pitch as well as finish chances.
The early signs are sharp. Isak scored twice inside the opening nine minutes as Liverpool beat promoted Ipswich Town 2-0 in early September, according to Reuters. He now has 60 Premier League goals in his career. His best league season remains 2024-25 with Newcastle, when he scored 23 times.
What makes this stand out is the tone. No looking back, no excuses about fitness or fees. Just a striker who waited a year for a proper run and finally feels ready to lead the line.
