All 88 Van Goghs hang together in Otterlo first time since 1984

All 88 Vincent van Gogh paintings held by the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, the Netherlands, are hanging together for the first time since 1984.

The show, titled Van Gogh, All Our Paintings, opened on 15 September 2026 and runs until 3 January 2027, according to the museum. It was reported in the week leading up to 18 September 2026 by The Art Newspaper.

The museum stands in a national park near the Dutch village of Otterlo. It normally has gallery space for only about half of its 88 Van Goghs. The rest are usually in storage, on loan elsewhere, or in the conservation studio for treatment and research.

The group was bought between 1908 and 1930 by Helene Kröller-Müller, the collector who founded the museum. It is the largest holding of Van Gogh's work in the world after the family holding at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

The exhibition does not follow a timeline. Works from across Van Gogh's career from 1881 to 1890 are mixed by subject, so early Dutch pictures hang beside late French ones.

The hang is organised in three sections loosely inspired by the Christian virtues of faith, hope and charity. Curator Renske Cohen Tervaert changed the third section from charity to love.

The idea came from Van Gogh's only known sermon text, delivered on 29 October 1876 at the Richmond Methodist Church in Richmond, London. He was 23 at the time. He had recently been dismissed from his job as an art dealer in Covent Garden in London and was working as an assistant teacher in Isleworth, west London.

For visitors, this means direct comparison across years. Lane of Poplars at Sunset, painted in Nuenen in the Netherlands in October 1884, hangs with Pine Trees at Sunset, painted in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in France in December 1889. Both are sunset scenes made five years apart.

The selection also includes a large study, a full-size preparatory painting, for The Potato Eaters dated April to May 1885. It includes Four Sunflowers Gone to Seed dated August to October 1887.

The museum has added a tactile display of Bridge at Arles for blind and partially sighted visitors, the museum says. Visitors can touch the bridge shape with their hands and listen to an audio description through headphones. The Kröller-Müller Museum also offers a one-hour guided group tour of the exhibition.

Van Gogh lived from 1853 to 1890. His Otterlo paintings will return to their usual rotation after 3 January 2027.
