The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 both launched this summer, setting up a direct comparison at the top of the rugged smartwatch market. Both use titanium bodies. Both include 64GB of storage. They differ in size, screen type, chips, voice assistants, and health sensing.

Samsung sells the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 in gray or silver. Apple sells the Watch Ultra 4 in black or natural, with an Hermes version adding a titanium band and two ocean-themed watch faces Engadget. The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is a 47 mm GPS watch. It is 10.7mm thick with a 1.52-inch-wide display. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is 12mm deep with a rectangular display that measures 49mm tall by 44mm wide.

Chassis and durability

Titanium is standard on both models. Apple lists the Watch Ultra 4 with IP6X dust resistance, meaning it is sealed against dust, plus 100-meter water resistance and an EN13319 rating, the standard used for dive depth gauges. Samsung lists the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 with IP69K dust and water resistance, meaning protection against dust and strong water jets, plus an EN13319 rating and 100-meter water resistance Engadget. Samsung also lists 10 ATM, a pressure rating equal to 100 meters of depth, and says the watch supports professional diving. Samsung showed the Watch Ultra 2 and the Watch 9 at Galaxy Unpacked in July 2026.

The broader context for outdoor and dive-app testers here is that the small rating differences decide which watch fits which use. EN13319 and the 100-meter figure appear on both spec sheets. 10 ATM and IP69K appear only on Samsung's sheet. IP6X appears only on Apple's.

Displays

Samsung uses a round Super AMOLED screen, a type of bright screen with rich contrast, set inside a frame that is square with rounded corners. Apple uses a rectangular wide-angle OLED LTPO3 screen with Retina, Apple's name for a sharp, high-resolution display. The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 reaches 5,000 nits of peak brightness. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 reaches 3,000 nits. Nits are units of screen brightness. Samsung calls the Ultra 2 display the brightest display ever on a Galaxy Watch.

In my view, the raw brightness numbers need context before judging outdoor use. Readability outside depends on more than peak nits, including ambient light sensors, auto-brightness curves, and always-on behavior, but Samsung has more headroom for direct sunlight.

Silicon and assistants

The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is the first Galaxy Watch to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear Elite Platform, according to Samsung. That chip is paired with 2GB of memory and 64GB of storage in the model compared here, with Google's Gemini AI assistant built in. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 uses Apple's S11 chip and includes 64GB of storage. It includes the new Siri and supports Audio Intelligence features that are also coming to the Watch Series 12. Apple also offers Siri Recap, which remembers conversations for the user Engadget.

The broader context for developers here is that the on-wrist pairing looks familiar. It is Qualcomm plus Gemini on one side and Apple silicon plus Siri on the other. Memory size was disclosed only for Samsung in the materials compared here.

Battery and health stack

Apple says the Watch Ultra 4 lasts up to 50 hours on a charge. Samsung's Ultra 2 has an 800 mAh battery, a measure of battery capacity, which Samsung calls the largest battery in the Galaxy Watch line. Other materials list the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 at up to 60 hours per charge. Apple described the Ultra 4 in its September 2026 newsroom release titled 'Apple unveils Apple Watch Ultra 4' as the ultimate sports and adventure watch with new advanced health and fitness features and longer battery life Apple. That release was published on September 9, 2026, after an unveiling set for September 9. The health hardware centers on a new Health Sensing System on the Watch Ultra 4. Apple says the Watch Ultra 4 checks heart rate every five seconds, all day, and calls it the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable. Samsung announced the Galaxy Watch 9 alongside the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, describing both as health companions on the wrist.

The broader context here is sampling density and continuity. Measuring heart rate every five seconds, all day, creates more background data and raises the bar for filtering out motion noise, sorting sleep stages, and managing power. In my view, that is where the Ultra models now compete, less on adding another sensor and more on keeping high-rate sensing running without draining the battery.

Looking at what this means for builders, the two watches show parallel paths. Samsung is pushing higher brightness and larger battery capacity while moving to Snapdragon Wear Elite and Gemini for on-wrist help. Apple is keeping peak brightness lower while pushing continuous sensing and on-device audio intelligence with the S11 and Siri. Both keep titanium, 100-meter water resistance, and 64GB of storage as the baseline for rugged flagship watches. The choice for technical users will likely come down to ecosystem lock-in, dive and outdoor certification needs, and which assistant system fits existing app work.
