Mets' Jared Young Carted Off After Collision in Loss to Phillies
New York Mets first baseman Jared Young was carted off the field in the sixth inning Thursday night after a violent collision with pitcher Nolan McLean in a 3-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.
McLean's knee struck Young on the head as the two converged on Justin Crawford's slow grounder near first base, knocking Young out, The Guardian reported. Philadelphia led 1-0 at the time.
Young fell face-first and did not move. Players from both sides stood by as trainers rushed in. The park went quiet.
When Young regained consciousness, his first words were "What happened?" Mets interim manager Andy Green told reporters after the game. Trainers immobilized Young — strapping him down as a precaution for a possible neck or head injury — and drove him off on a cart. He flashed a thumbs up before he left the field.
Green called it "a terrifying moment on a baseball field," ESPN reported. Young was taken to a hospital for testing. A CT scan, a detailed X-ray of the brain, came back negative.
He showed concussion symptoms but had full use of his arms and legs, Green said. Concussion here means a brain injury caused by a blow to the head, often with confusion and dizziness.
For anyone watching, that thumbs up mattered. It was the first clear sign that Young was responsive after lying motionless.
McLean stayed in the game after the delay. He struck out Garrett Stubbs looking — watching a called third strike go by without swinging — to end the inning. He did not return for the seventh, when reliever Tobias Myers took over. McLean finished with five strikeouts on the night.
The final was Philadelphia 3, New York 0 on Sept. 17. Don Mattingly served as Philadelphia's interim manager for the game.
Young, 31, was playing his first full season in the majors. He was hitting .266 with nine homers and 39 RBIs — runs driven in — across 103 games. He had already missed six weeks earlier this season with a left knee injury.
