Phantom at 40: Lloyd Webber rebuilds original album from Abbey Road tapes
Andrew Lloyd Webber has gone back to the original Abbey Road tapes to remix and remaster The Phantom of the Opera for its 40th anniversary.
The new version, called The Phantom of the Opera (The Andrew Lloyd Webber 2026 Mix), will be released digitally on 9 October. It runs to 29 tracks and keeps the original London performances by Michael Crawford as the Phantom, Sarah Brightman as Christine and Steve Barton as Raoul, conducted by Mike Reed, according to details reported by WhatsOnStage.
The title song by Brightman and Crawford came out as a digital single on 18 September. Physical editions follow. A 3LP vinyl and 2CD edition arrives on 6 November, with a limited-edition six-LP box set, Phantom of the Opera – A Collector's Piece Indeed, due on 20 November.
The project started with the analogue master tapes recorded at Abbey Road Studios in September and October 1986. Of the 11 original two-inch reels, eight survived intact. Those eight were remixed without enhancement.
Three did not. Material from the missing reels was restored using an unplayed vinyl pressing of the original 1986 album.
The new mix also restores sections of the score cut from the first album because of running-time restrictions. The vinyl LP could hold far less music than later formats, so parts of the show were left off in 1986.
There is unheard material too. The release includes a cassette demo of the title song from its earliest life as a proposed single. It includes ‘Box Five’, an early version of the managers’ ‘Notes’ scene later reworked into ‘Prima Donna’. And it includes an early demo of ‘Masquerade’ with original lyrics by Richard Stilgoe.
The original cast recording has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide. It was the first musical cast recording to debut at number one in the UK charts.
The six-LP box set adds a full libretto, the printed words and dialogue of the show, according to the official store listing. LW Entertainment published its announcement of the project on 17 September 2026.
For fans, this means familiar voices in a clearer frame, with missing bars put back and early drafts left in for comparison.
