Meshell Ndegeocello links with Bill Callahan and Chris Thile for Dylan cover

Meshell Ndegeocello has teamed up with Bill Callahan and Chris Thile to record Bob Dylan's "With God on Our Side".

The track is taken from Synonym, Ndegeocello's collaborative album set for release on 2 October via Blue Note Records. Pitchfork detailed the collaboration on 18 September.

The new version arrives with its own music video. The clip was directed by Damani Baker. All three musicians perform on the recording, with Thile, a member of Nickel Creek, joining Ndegeocello and Callahan.

Synonym is organised as a duet covers album, meaning each track pairs Ndegeocello with a different guest to reinterpret a song first released by someone else. It is her third album for Blue Note Records. The label announced the project on 15 July, with Blue Note confirmed as the label releasing it.

The guest list is broad. Collaborators named for the album include Chaka Khan, Brandi Carlile, Moses Sumney and Anohni. Cat Power and Cynthia Erivo are also among the featured collaborators.

One pairing looks to 1980s pop. Ndegeocello and Cat Power have recorded a version of "Don't You Want Me" by The Human League for Synonym. That song sits alongside the Dylan cover on the same album.

Live dates are also listed around the release period. Her official site lists three nights at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York on 18, 19 and 20 September. It also lists an appearance at the 69th Monterey Jazz Festival in Monterey on 25-27 September, and at the Good Moon Festival in Durham on 8-10 October, according to her official site. Further listings include City Winery Nashville in Nashville on 20 January and two nights at The Freight in Berkeley on 26 and 27 March.

What makes this stand out is the contrast in the source material. One is a 1960s folk protest song built around pointed questions. The other is a synthesiser-led pop duet that topped charts in the 1980s. Hearing both reworked as duets gives listeners two very different entry points into the same project.

For fans, this means a short wait for the full record. The Callahan and Thile collaboration has been released ahead of the full album on 2 October. That is less than a month after the track was revealed, with more details on the complete tracklist expected before release.
