Tay Keith cause of death revealed as accidental overdose at 29
Grammy-nominated producer Tay Keith died of an accidental drug overdose on 18 June. He was 29.
The cause was confirmed in an autopsy report obtained from the Office of the Medical Examiner in Nashville on 17 September. The report lists “toxic effects of drugs” as the circumstances of death, and names mitragynine, 7-hydroxy mitragynine, mitragynine pseudoindoxyl and ketamine toxicity Billboard.
Keith, whose birth name was Brytavious Lakeith Chambers, was found unresponsive in his Nashville apartment during a wellness check. Metro Nashville Police said foul play was not suspected.
The report found the overdose was accidental. It also noted the presence of alcohol and nicotine alongside ketamine and mitragynine-related compounds WTOC. Mitragynine is a compound associated with kratom, a plant often sold in powders and supplements.
Keith was best recognised for his work behind ‘Sicko Mode’ USA TODAY. As a producer, he earned 11 top 10s on the Billboard Hot 100, the US singles chart, including four No. 1 hits.
He also collected six No. 1s on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart this decade. That is the most of any producer in that period. He received two Grammy nominations.
His death in June prompted tributes from collaborators, including Drake. The medical examiner’s findings were released three months later, after toxicology work was completed.
