The invention that lets museums move art without touching it

You never actually touch the painting. That is the idea behind a new hardware system from Melbourne, Australia.
Sam Shmith, the former studio manager for artist Adam Pendleton, invented the Artist Engineering (AE) Hardware system for moving works of art, according to The Art Newspaper. The kit had been on the market for about a year as of 18 September 2026. It aims to minimise damage during transport and installation by removing direct contact with the work.
The core is simple. A reusable grip locks into a small bracket fixed permanently in the frame or support. Handlers hold the grip, not the art. When the work is on the wall, the grip clicks off and only the discreet bracket stays behind.
That same bracket doubles as a fixing point inside a transit frame, the rigid outer frame used to ship pictures. The work can be locked down for the lorry and lifted out without hands on paint or surface. The brackets were drawn up with flat, 2D works in mind but suit any material. They can be built into sculptural or wall-based objects during fabrication.
Two early users show the range. The National Gallery in London is assessing the system. In the United States, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art has fitted it to a frequently loaned painting by Amy Sherald that measures about 305cm by 274cm. Big. Heavy. Often on the road.
Artist Engineering says the method removes the need for nitrile, cotton or latex gloves during handling, according to the company site Artist Engineering. It also says the system removes the need for polyethylene foam during staging, which cuts waste.
The Victorian Premier's Design Awards describes the kit as the first system to eliminate direct contact in artwork handling Victorian Premier's Design Awards.
What makes this stand out for visitors is what does not happen. No chipped corners in transit. No glove marks. No last-minute conservation drama before opening night. Just the work, on the wall, ready to be seen.
