Anthropic settlement dispute deadline doubled to 60 days after claim errors

Rightsholders disputing their share of Anthropic's US$1.5 billion copyright settlement now have 60 days to back up their claim.

The window has doubled. The previous deadline gave claimants 30 days from the day they received notice of their settlement allocation, according to Publishers Marketplace. Those notices went out between 2 and 4 September.

The extension was agreed on 17 September 2026, the Authors Guild reported. It follows widespread errors in claims for the settlement. More time helps. It does not fix the mistakes on its own.

The money comes from a copyright lawsuit in the United States. A federal judge in San Francisco approved Anthropic's US$1.5 billion settlement, Reuters reported, with final court approval granted on 20 July 2026. It is the largest settlement ever in a US copyright case.

The dispute is about allocation, meaning how the payout is split when more than one person claims the same work. Those rival claimants are called co-claimants. Each claimant needs the Claim Number and PIN from their notice to see the shared claim details in the Allocation Portal, the online system for checking competing claims.

Claimants who disagree with the split are asked to submit supporting information within 60 days of receiving access to that consolidated claim information, the settlement website states. The 60-day period is for sending in evidence. It is not a deadline for settling every disagreement. The website says resolution may take longer than 60 days for some claimants.

For writers and publishers waiting for payment, this means timing matters. Works with disputes that are not resolved before the first distribution will miss that first payout and be included in a later one.

The first round of payments is expected on or before 15 November 2026. It will cover works with no allocation disagreement, or disagreements resolved quickly, and where claimants supplied all the information needed to process payment. Money for works left out of that round will wait temporarily in reserve in the escrow account, a holding account for the Settlement Fund. Payments will go out by the method chosen on each valid Claim Form, the paperwork required to join the payout.

Several earlier deadlines have already closed. The deadline to file a Claim Form was 30 March 2026. The deadlines to object to the settlement and to opt out, meaning to leave the group and keep a separate right to sue, both passed on 9 February 2026. The deadline to reinclude previously excluded works was 9 March 2026, and those works can no longer be added back.
