Copenhagen set for six world road titles in two fast days

Six world titles are on the line in Copenhagen on 19 and 20 September.

The Danish capital hosts the fourth edition of the World Athletics Road Running Championships, branded Copenhagen 26 World Athletics. First held in 2023, the event awards global titles on the roads over the mile, 5km and half marathon BBC. That means three men's races and three women's races.

The distances ask very different questions. The mile, about 1.6km, is a sharp test of speed and positioning with no room to hide. The 5km rewards sustained pace and a well-timed kick. Then comes the half marathon, 21.1km or 13.1 miles, where patience matters and a negative split — running the second half faster than the first — often wins.

Racing is spread across two days. The championships are scheduled for 19-20 September 2026 Olympics.com, with the half marathon set for 20 September in Copenhagen World Athletics. That half marathon also carries a capacity of 35,000 participants, which points to the scale of the weekend beyond the elite fields.

Great Britain and Northern Ireland will send a 13-strong team to the championships BBC. Road championships suit versatile athletes. Track speed helps over the mile and 5km. Strength and efficient running help over the half.

It will be fast. Copenhagen is flat and built for times, and championship road racing is often decided in the final minutes rather than from the gun.

For fans, this means an easy weekend to follow. In Britain, the BBC will show the Mile Race on 19 September from 09:00-09:45 BST on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app. The 5km follows the same day from 13:00-14:30 BST. The half marathon is on 20 September from 08:00-10:35. In the United States, coverage will air live on Peacock on Saturday and Sunday.
