Grandson of Princess Katherine of Greece Found Dead in London During Assault Investigation
Nicholas George Brandram, the 44-year-old grandson of the late Princess Katherine of Greece, was found dead in his west London home while under investigation in a 2017 assault case known in Britain as the "Putney Pusher."
Brandram was discovered unresponsive on Tuesday night inside a property in Chiswick, a residential neighborhood in west London. London's Metropolitan Police, the force that polices most of the capital, said the death was unexpected but is not believed to be suspicious, according to Town & Country.
Brandram was a banker and former British Army soldier. He was also a descendant of Queen Victoria, the 19th-century monarch from whom many of Europe's royal families trace their lines.
The investigation centered on an incident from May 2017 on Putney Bridge in West London. Police said a male jogger shoved a 33-year-old woman into the path of an oncoming bus. She suffered minor injuries. The bus stopped in time.
The case drew wide attention in Britain and went unsolved for years. Brandram was arrested in June on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, the English-law term for serious physical injury, and on suspicion of pushing the woman.
His family denies he was involved. Relatives said there was "no credible evidence" linking him to the attack, as reported by The New York Times. They said he took his own life after months of immense pressure caused by the police investigation.
Authorities confirmed his identity after his death. The police investigation into the Putney Bridge incident remains ongoing.
An inquest will open next week. An inquest is the formal legal inquiry held in England and Wales to establish the facts around a sudden or unexplained death. It does not assign criminal blame.
