Netflix has given a Spanish film the longest cinema-to-streaming wait in its history.

The gap, known in the trade as a window, meaning the time between a cinema release and arrival on streaming, is 47 days for “La Bola Negra” in the United States, from 16 October to 1 December, according to Variety. That is a record. No other Netflix film has waited longer.

“La Bola Negra” is a Movistar Plus Original directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi. It follows gay life in Spain across three years — 1932, 1937 and 2017 — and draws on four pages of an unfinished novel by Federico García Lorca.

The release path is already set. The film will open in Spanish cinemas through distributor Elástica on 25 September. It will then have its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before its US cinema run. Netflix picked up US and Canada rights to the film at Cannes.

The film heads to the San Sebastián Film Festival as part of a strong Spanish line-up. The 74th edition runs from 18 to 26 September 2026, according to the festival. Movistar Plus has three titles in major sections: “La Bola Negra,” “El Castillo” and “5 Minutes More.” Netflix Spain has one: “After Society.”

Spain arrives with momentum. The country earned five slots in main competition at Cannes over the last year, more than any country outside France. San Sebastián director José Luis Rebordinos said: “Spanish Cinema has never been more powerful, with so many international titles.”

“La Bola Negra” was selected In Competition for features at the 2026 Festival de Cannes and won the Award for Best Director, shared with another winner, according to the Festival de Cannes. Cannes lists it as a Spain-France production. Its budget has been reported as between €14 million ($16 million) and €18 million ($20 million).

“El Castillo,” the other headline Movistar Plus title, is a six-part series, meaning a drama told in six episodes, co-created by Isabel Peña.

For viewers, this means choice. “La Bola Negra” will get a full cinema run first in Spain and the US before it reaches living rooms on Netflix.
