Gerard pulls clear at Wentworth as McIlroy chases and big names fall

Ryan Gerard leads the BMW PGA Championship by four shots from Rory McIlroy at the halfway stage at Wentworth.

The American reached 12 under par after a flawless second-round 65 on the evening of Friday, 18 September 2026. McIlroy sits at eight under after a five-under-par 67, according to BBC.

Gerard started the day at five under. He then made five birdies and an eagle and did not drop a shot. His seven-under round clicked into place on the 17th, where a 20-foot eagle putt moved him clear at the top, as reported by Yahoo Sports.

Two shots behind Gerard sit Australian Adam Scott and Italian Filippo Celli. Both are tied for second at 10 under par. Aaron Rai and Manuel Elvira are one stroke further back at nine under.

McIlroy had to work to stay in touch. His 67 kept him inside the top group, but Gerard's late eagle stretched the gap. Rai shot 69 while playing alongside McIlroy and Ryan Fox.

There was trouble elsewhere in the field. Patrick Reed retired after nine holes of his second round through injury. He was nine over par for the round at the time. Reed led the DP World Tour's Race to Dubai standings when he withdrew.

The cut line, the score that decides who plays the weekend, claimed several big names. Brooks Koepka missed out at one over par. Tommy Fleetwood followed a poor start with a second-round 74 to finish at three over and also go home.

Jon Rahm endured the roughest two days. He followed an opening 78 with a 77. That left him 138th and last among the players who finished on Friday.

What makes this stand out is the shape of the weekend. Gerard has daylight, but Wentworth punishes loose tee shots and its closing stretch can turn a calm lead tight in a hurry. McIlroy is close enough to strike. Scott and Celli are closer still.
