Shakira opens Madrid residency to 55,000 fans
Shakira opened her 12-date Madrid residency before 55,000 fans on Friday, Sept. 18. The concert at Shakira Stadium was her first in Spain in eight years, according to Billboard.
Shakira Stadium is a temporary venue built specifically for the run. It sits within the Iberdrola Music complex in Villaverde, in the south of Madrid, as reported by Hola.
The opening show ran for nearly two hours. There were no surprise guests.
The setlist drew across her catalogue in Spanish and English. Songs on the night included “Girl Like Me,” “Te Felicito,” “TQG,” “Soltera,” “Hips Don’t Lie,” “Dai Dai,” “Acróstico” and “Te Dejo Madrid.”
“Te Dejo Madrid” was a new addition compared with previous stops on the tour. Shakira dedicated “Acróstico” to her children Milan and Sasha during the show.
A residency, a run of shows fixed in one city rather than moving night to night, gives visiting fans a single destination. Eleven dates remained after the opening night, with the run organised to continue into October.
The Madrid dates are the only European stop on her current world tour. Shows are scheduled from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., with Macondo Park, a fan area at Iberdrola Music, open from noon to midnight local time, according to Billboard.
The residency began life as a shorter engagement. It was initially planned for Sept. 25–27 at the Iberdrola Music space before extra dates were added to meet demand.
For fans, this means Madrid is the centre of this tour for the next two weeks. One opening night is done. Eleven more crowds will follow.
