Manchester United Muslim fans call for Ratcliffe to go over immigration remarks
Manchester United Muslim Supporters' Club says co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe "must go" after he said high immigration and high taxes had left the country "on the slide".
The group issued a statement of no confidence in the club's ownership. It said it had lost confidence in the current ownership structure, according to BBC Sport.
Ratcliffe made the comments in a BBC interview on Saturday 19 September. He said the UK was in decline because of high taxes and high immigration levels.
The supporters' statement was published on the group's official X account, Man United Muslims. It concluded: "The Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe must go." That call covers both Ratcliffe and the Glazer family, who remain the majority owners at Old Trafford.
Ratcliffe is the founder of the chemicals company Ineos, as noted by BBC News. He bought a 27.7% stake in United in 2024 and took charge of football operations. In the same interview, he also called for more investment in the North Sea.
This is not the first row over his language on immigration. In February, Ratcliffe said the UK had been "colonised by immigrants". He later apologised for "offending some people".
That earlier remark drew a sharp response. Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the comments and called for an apology, Reuters reported. United supporters then displayed a banner at a match in early March reading "Proudly colonised by immigrants", according to Reuters.
For many fans, this cuts deeper than results. A supporters' club speaks for people who travel together, stand together and share the same ninety minutes. When that voice says it has lost confidence, it lands inside the stadium as well as outside it.
