England crush Sri Lanka to seal 3-0 and go No.1

England beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the third T20 international at Old Trafford on 19 September to complete a 3-0 series sweep and return to number one in the world T20 rankings, according to BBC Sport.

It was ruthless from start to finish. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 124 in 18.5 overs. England chased 126-2 in only 9.4 overs. In T20 cricket, where each side faces 20 overs of six balls, that is a thrashing.

England shared the wickets around. Sonny Baker took 2-17, Jofra Archer took 2-23 and Will Jacks took 2-31. Jamie Overton was the most economical of all, taking a wicket and conceding only 15 runs in his four overs.

Sri Lanka never found a way to slow the game down. No batter was able to build a long innings. England kept taking wickets at regular intervals and kept the run rate tight.

The chase was even more one-sided. Jos Buttler led the way with 62 not out off 32 balls. He timed the ball cleanly from the start and finished the job himself.

Captain Harry Brook added 33 off 21 balls before he was run out, dismissed while the batters were attempting a run. England still had more than half their innings left when they reached the target.

They won with 62 balls to spare. That is the most balls remaining in a successful chase for England in a home T20 international.

The result also settled the series story. England won 3-0. They reclaimed the number one T20 ranking from India.

It continues a strong run under Brook. England have now won 23 of their 26 completed T20s since he took charge in the summer of 2024, according to BBC Sport.

What makes this stand out is the balance of the performance. The seamers struck early, the spinners held the middle overs, then the batters removed any doubt. For fans, this was T20 at its simplest: bowl a side out cheaply, then chase without fuss.
