Brighton sweep champions Arsenal aside in 3-0 shock
Arsenal's perfect start is gone. Brighton beat the champions 3-0 at the Amex Stadium on 19 September in a Matchweek 5 Premier League fixture.
It was Arsenal's first league defeat of the season. A win would have made it five straight victories to open the defence of their title, after they arrived on the south coast in strong form Reuters.
Manager Mikel Arteta did not hide. He gave his post-match reaction to Match of the Day and opened with credit for the hosts BBC Sport.
"First of all congratulations to Brighton," Arteta told Match of the Day. "I am really disappointed" with the result and the performance.
He went further in his wider reaction. Arteta called the defeat painful and said Arsenal were "very far" from the standards required to compete BBC Sport.
"It's a big lesson to learn," he added.
The scoreline stung for another reason. This was Arsenal's biggest league defeat as reigning top-flight champions since a 3-0 loss at Everton in October 1989 BBC Sport.
