GB Men Take World Bronze as Women Finish Fourth in Ottawa

Great Britain's men will bring home bronze from the Wheelchair Basketball World Championships.

They beat Germany 67-56 in the men's third-place game — the bronze-medal decider — in Ottawa on 19 September, with Gregg Warburton scoring 20 points to lead the way, BBC Sport. It was a clean response after a painful semifinal exit.

That semifinal was a 63-59 loss to Italy. Italy's win sent the Italians into their first-ever World Championship final, IWBF. On the other side of the bracket, Australia edged Germany after a last-gasp steal by Brown to book the other final spot.

The bronze keeps a streak alive. Britain's men have now medalled at three straight World Championships. They won gold in 2018, then silver in 2022, and now bronze.

It is a run few programmes can match. Different group, different tournament, same result: a podium finish.

Britain's women could not join them on the podium. They lost 63-50 to the Netherlands in the women's bronze-medal game at TD Place, with Sophie Carrigill captaining the side.

The Dutch women know this stage cold. They were World Champions in both 2018 and 2022. Canada had ended their push for another title in the semifinals, sending the Netherlands into Saturday's 12:15 bronze-medal game against Britain, IWBF.

For three quarters, Britain stayed with them. The game was tied 44-44 going into the fourth. Then the Netherlands pulled away, outscoring Britain 19-6 in the final quarter to seal third.

Fourth still marks progress. Britain's women finished ninth at the 2022 edition. They leave Ottawa four places off the podium but five places up from last time.

What makes this stand out for fans is the double picture. One team stayed on its medal run. The other moved much closer to starting one.
