Everton stay unbeaten and climb to fifth after edging Ipswich

Everton are fifth in the Premier League and still unbeaten after five games.

They beat Ipswich Town 1-0 at home to move to nine points. The record so far is two wins and three draws. They are one of only five teams in the division yet to lose, according to BBC Sport.

Thierno Barry settled it early. He scored in the 11th minute. It was his fifth goal of the season. The striker completed his move from Villarreal for an undisclosed fee on 9 July 2025.

Everton made most of the running. They had 21 shots against Ipswich. Only two were on target. That wastefulness in front of goal is the one clear frustration from an otherwise solid start.

Manager David Moyes did not hide from that point. He told BBC Sport he expects his side to be unbeaten after five games. He added he is disappointed they are not scoring more goals.

Defence is doing the heavy lifting. Everton have kept five clean sheets in seven matches in all competitions. A clean sheet, simply put, means the goalkeeper and defence conceded nothing.

That solidity has carried into the cups too. Everton have won two Carabao Cup ties, England's midweek knockout competition. The reward is a home last-16 tie against Newcastle United in October.

Moyes is keeping the wider talk calm. Asked about European qualification, he said: "We are not using those words this year." It is a quieter line than in April 2025, when he said the challenge for next season should be to finish in a position to qualify for Europe.

The 63-year-old is back for a second spell as Everton manager. He has spoken before about adding more 'quality' and 'style' to the team. Right now, the style is less important than the shape.

What makes this stand out is the steadiness. Everton are not blowing teams away. They are not chasing games late. They score once, they stand firm, and they take something from every league outing so far.
