Great Britain sweep Ecuador to reach Davis Cup Final Eight

Great Britain are through to the Davis Cup Final Eight in Bologna after taking an unassailable 3-0 lead over Ecuador in London.

Henry Patten and Neal Skupski sealed the second-round qualifier with a 6-3, 6-4 doubles win over Gonzalo Escobar and Diego Hidalgo on Sunday, 20 September at the Copper Box Arena, BBC Sport reported. Job done with two matches to spare.

A Davis Cup tie is a country-versus-country contest decided across five matches. Three wins ends the argument. Britain will now join the Final Eight in Bologna from 24 to 29 November.

Patten and Skupski did it in straight sets. They needed no deciding set, no tiebreak — a tiebreak, first to seven points by two — to close out the Ecuador pair and book Britain’s trip to Italy.

The platform came on Saturday, 19 September. Toby Samuel marked his Davis Cup debut with a comeback, losing the first set to Andres Andrade before winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Arthur Fery followed with a crisp 7-5, 6-0 victory over Alvaro Guillen Meza.

That left Britain 2-0 up overnight in this best-of-five tie. Sunday’s doubles rubber, scheduled for 12:00 BST, came first, ahead of two reverse singles where the singles players swap opponents.

Britain did it without Cameron Norrie, who withdrew before the tie. They leaned instead on new faces and proven doubles strength. Patten has been ranked world No. 1 in doubles and Skupski arrived in London as the new US Open champion. Both are Grand Slam doubles champions.

What makes this stand out is the calm of the handover. Samuel dropped his opening set on debut and reset. Fery lost only five games in his second set across the weekend — actually, he lost none in his second set, a 6-0 bagel. Then the senior pair finished the job in under the glare of a deciding rubber.

For fans, this means November matters. Bologna hosts the eight-team finals week that decides the Davis Cup. Britain will be there.
