Indonesian Descendants of the Sun films head to Busan sales market
Barunson E&A will shop a two-part Indonesian big-screen version of Descendants of the Sun to international buyers at the Asian Contents & Film Market in Busan, Variety reported.
The market runs Oct. 10-13. International sales is the trade in licensing a film to distributors country by country, and Busan is where that business for much of Asia gets done.
The film is an adaptation of the Korean series that first aired in 2016. It stars Reza Rahadian and Dian Sastrowardoyo, two of Indonesia’s best-known screen actors.
Hanung Bramantyo directs. His version keeps the central romance between a soldier and a surgeon but moves it into an Indonesia-specific setting and cultural backdrop.
Both parts have already been shot. Production has wrapped after a back-to-back shoot, with Part One aiming for a release in Indonesian theatres by mid-2027, according to Variety.
The producing line-up spans Korea and Indonesia. Barunson E&A is making the film with Dapur Film, Tobali Putra Productions, NEWKO and Barunson C&C, its subsidiary production arm. NEW, or Next Entertainment World, the owner of the original Descendants of the Sun intellectual property, the legal rights to the story and characters, has joined as a co-production company.
The original series gives the sellers a strong calling card. It drew a 38.8% rating in its home market and was later distributed in more than 30 territories, including the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Japan and Russia, Variety reported.
For fans, this means a familiar story told in a new language and landscape. Two finished films. A local cast. A 2027 date on the calendar in Indonesia first, with the rest of the world to be sold in Busan.
