Siri AI in iOS 27: Personal Context, App Actions, and Requirements

What can it do
The first change is personal context understanding, meaning Siri can use your own content to answer questions. With permission, Siri AI learns from on-device content such as emails and messages to handle requests that used to require manual lookup. Think of it less as a voice remote and more as search over your own messages. Engadget
In practice, you can ask for a hotel address buried in emails and conversations and have Siri copy it to the clipboard. You can also ask it to search messages to retrieve a song or book recommendation sent by a friend.
The second change is a deeper connection to activity inside apps. Apple states Siri in iOS 27 connects to more in-app activity, and that includes third-party apps. How to get it and where it runs
Siri AI is opt-in. Wirecutter After updating, iOS 27 shows a Settings notification for "Optimize Search and Siri" to enable on-device learning, which means learning from your content happens on the device itself. Use requires a device that supports Apple Intelligence: iPhone 15 Pro or later, Mac or iPad with M1 chip or later, and the seventh-generation A17 Pro iPad mini. The new Siri AI features were made available for developer testing across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 and visionOS 27, with developer testing in a future watchOS 27 beta to follow. The broader context here is architectural and matters for developers and IT teams. Siri is moving from understanding only fixed commands to retrieving information from personal on-device data through permissioned app connections. That puts data hygiene, permission scoping, and predictable app behavior at the center. Opt-in plus on-device learning lowers exposure compared with server-side personalization, but testing becomes less predictable. Results will vary by mailbox, message history, language setting, and whether third-party apps have added the needed support.
In my view, two limits will shape adoption in the near term. The English-only beta and the Apple Intelligence hardware requirement narrow the test group, especially outside the United States, and the EU exclusion creates a separate version that enterprise developers must handle in support plans. If those gaps close, the benefit is practical. A dependable way to pull addresses, recommendations, flight details, and health data by voice, inside first- and third-party apps, would remove much of the small manual work that phones still require.
