Bungie promises Destiny 2 return and Marathon fixes to earn back trust

Bungie says it is not done with Destiny.

The studio has promised to return to Destiny 2 and improve Marathon in a bid to win back players' trust. The plan was set out in a joint statement from new studio head Poria Torkan and new Marathon general manager Josh Deane, Video Games Chronicle reported on 21 September 2026.

The statement, titled "The Next Chapter for Bungie", was published on the studio's website on 16 September. It opens bluntly. "Today, we want to talk candidly about where Bungie is, where Destiny and Marathon need to go, and how we intend to earn back your trust," Torkan and Deane wrote, according to Bungie.

For Destiny 2, the message is a recommitment. Destiny 2 is Bungie's long-running online shooter, updated over years with new stories, locations and gear. Bungie said "we are not done with Destiny" when addressing the game's future.

The first step, the studio said, is bringing back older campaigns and locations held in the Destiny Content Vault. The Vault is the system Bungie uses to take older missions and destinations out of the playable game to manage its size and upkeep. Bungie acknowledged that removing those experiences had a lasting impact on player trust and enjoyment.

That work follows the game's last major update. Destiny 2's final major content update, Monument of Triumph, was released on 9 June.

Marathon is the other half of the plan. Bungie said it intends to improve the game, its next large project, as part of the same trust-rebuilding effort. No new date or feature list was given in the reported summary.

The statement lands after a difficult period for the studio. Bungie layoffs were reported to have affected 292 workers. Sony, which owns Bungie, said the cuts would affect "most" of the Destiny team and "some" Marathon team members.

For players, this means old ground may become playable again. Bungie has not yet said which campaigns return first, or when. The detail matters here. Vaulted content has been a sore point for years because paid stories disappeared from the game.
