Prince William speaks to Canada's Mark Carney in first call
The Prince of Wales spoke by telephone to Canada's Prime Minister on Monday afternoon in their first conversation since Mark Carney took office.
Kensington Palace said the call focused on the longstanding relationship between the United Kingdom and Canada Royal Central. It was their first discussion since Carney became prime minister.
The Court Circular, the official daily record of royal engagements, recorded the conversation in formal terms. It logged that Mark Carney MP, Prime Minister of Canada, had an audience of the King by telephone, with His Majesty represented by the Prince of Wales Royal.uk. An audience, in royal language, is a one-to-one meeting with the King.
Kensington Palace said the pair discussed the enduring strength of the relationship between the United Kingdom and Canada. They also discussed the Prince's longstanding affection for Canada and its people.
Carney became leader of Canada's Liberal Party in March 2025. Before entering politics, he held senior positions at both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England.
The Prince has a personal history with the country. He and Catherine, Princess of Wales, chose Canada for their first overseas tour together after their 2011 wedding, visiting later that year.
What makes this stand out is how often Canada appears in the royal paperwork. Canada became the first Commonwealth country outside the United Kingdom to feature His Majesty The King, King Charles III, on its banknotes. Much earlier, Queen Elizabeth II first appeared on a Bank of Canada $20 note in 1935, when she was still Princess Elizabeth.
