Jimmy Kimmel says McConaughey hugged him at an Emmys urinal

Matthew McConaughey hugged Jimmy Kimmel at an Emmys urinal, exposed and all. Kimmel told the story himself on Monday night's Jimmy Kimmel Live, as reported by Variety.

The show on 21 September 2026 featured Woody Harrelson as a guest. Kimmel said the incident happened at the recent Emmy Awards, shortly after he had left his seat.

He had gone to the bathroom to collect himself. He said he got choked up during the In Memoriam segment, the part of the awards that remembers people in the industry who have died.

That tribute included Cleto Escobedo III. Kimmel described Escobedo as his childhood best friend and the longtime bandleader for Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Kimmel said he was washing his hands when he noticed McConaughey at the urinal right next to him. McConaughey asked if he was OK.

Then came the hug. Kimmel said McConaughey gave him a warm embrace without leaving the urinal.

Kimmel said he asked, "Is your penis out?" McConaughey replied, "Yes it is." Kimmel then quoted McConaughey as adding, "In fact, I'm going to rub it up against you a little bit."

That was not the end of it. Kimmel said Harrelson walked out of a bathroom stall just then and saw the two of them together.

Kimmel said he was grateful for the hug. It lightened a heavy moment.

For viewers, the laugh landed because the grief was real. Kimmel did not hide why he was upset before he got to the joke.

Harrelson was on the programme to promote Brothers, his Apple TV series with McConaughey. During the interview he gave Kimmel a gigantic joint from The Woods, his West Hollywood cannabis lounge and dispensary.

Jimmy Kimmel Live airs weeknights at 11:35/10:35c and streams on Hulu, according to ABC. That night's lineup was listed as Harrelson, Sam Richardson and musical guest Greta Van Fleet.
