Branthwaite credits Munich reset for England return
Jarrad Branthwaite is back in an England squad. The Everton defender says a summer rehabilitation programme in Germany made it possible.
The 24-year-old was named by head coach Thomas Tuchel for Nations League fixtures against Spain, Czechia and Croatia. If he plays, it will be only his second senior cap, more than two years after his first The Guardian.
Branthwaite credits the turnaround to three or four weeks at the MYOS sports and health clinic in Munich. Everton sent him there at the start of the summer after another season wrecked by injury. He worked with specialists alongside the club's own staff, looking at movement patterns and how his injuries linked to the brain's control of movement.
The need for a reset was clear. Hamstring and groin problems have blighted him in recent years. He was restricted to 10 appearances last season by repeat hamstring issues. The lowest point came in April, when he was carried off in tears with a hamstring injury in the Merseyside derby defeat by Liverpool. That injury ended his season and ended any late push for the World Cup squad.
His one England appearance so far came as a substitute in a win against Bosnia and Herzegovina in June 2024. He was moved up from the under-21s in November 2024 but could not train fully and did not travel with the senior group. This call-up feels different. He had been ever-present in the Premier League when the squad was confirmed, and he had scored for Everton at Bournemouth in the build-up.
Tuchel had a close call to make in central defence. He chose Branthwaite over Chelsea's Levi Colwill and described the decision as "51% Jarrad" Yahoo Sport. The wider squad for the September and October window also includes Myles Lewis-Skelly, Alex Scott, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cole Palmer, with the announcement confirmed by England Football.
At club level, the timing is good. Everton manager David Moyes called the September call-up deserved. Teammate Jordan Pickford, called up alongside him, said Branthwaite would take an England return "in his stride" and can thrive for his country Everton. Everton were unbeaten in the early weeks of the season, drawing 0-0 at Tottenham Hotspur and then beating Ipswich Town 1-0 to stay unbeaten.
What makes this stand out is the simplicity of the story. A young centre-back lost a year to injuries that kept coming back. He went away to fix the pattern, not just the pain. Now he has a second chance in an England shirt.
