Microsoft Merges Playground Games and Turn 10 to Focus on Horizon and Fable
Microsoft is merging Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios into a single studio. The combined team will focus on the Forza and Fable franchises, with work centered on Forza Horizon and Fable, as reported by The Verge.

Microsoft describes the merger as part of a larger Xbox reorganization. It follows cuts last year in which more than 70 people at Turn 10 were laid off.
The two studios have worked together before. They collaborated on Forza Horizon 2, as documented by Xbox. They also jointly presented the first Forza Horizon 2 gameplay on Xbox One.
After last year's cuts, Microsoft said Turn 10 and Playground Games will continue to support Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon 5, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz. The new focus keeps Forza Horizon alongside Fable, with remaining Turn 10 staff joining Playground rather than operating as a separate studio.

The broader context here is production. Supporting two franchises plus ongoing updates, known as live support, divides leadership attention, hiring plans and test capacity. A single studio with two named priorities can sequence hiring, milestones and live operations through one management chain.
In my view, this fits a pattern I have seen over decades covering studios. Teams expand to cover a second franchise when they can, then narrow when updates and new development compete for the same people. I watched my own children learn the difference between Motorsport and Horizon by feel. Maintaining depth in one racing series while delivering a large role-playing franchise is already a full portfolio. A combined group centered on Horizon and Fable has room to give both sustained attention, and that focus tends to produce better tools, more stable pipelines and more polished releases over time.
