Coutain carries Sangre Grande soca to Billboard's September spotlight

Trinidad soca singer Coutain is Billboard's Caribbean Up-And-Comer for September 2026.
The feature, published on 22 September 2026, centres on an artist born Denzil Coutain in Sangre Grande, Trinidad, according to Billboard. Soca, the fast-paced carnival music built from calypso and Indian rhythms, is his home ground.
Coutain started releasing music in 2019 with his first single, 'African Dancer'. He followed with the project 'Product of Big Blood' in 2020, a joint tape 'G Syde Tape, Pt. 3' with Brooklyn Decent in 2022, and the Dwala-assisted project '1996' in 2024.
His recent run has been shaped by work with Trinidadian producer Michael 'Tano' Montano. The pair linked for 'Junction' in 2024 and 'Jamtown' in 2025. 'Jamtown' earned nearly two million official on-demand U.S. streams, according to Luminate, the data company that powers the U.S. charts.
In December 2025 he released 'Wedding Band', a reinterpretation of Mighty Sparrow's classic 'Mr. Walker'. The version with Tano is listed on his channel as 'Wedding Band (Ms. Walker)' with an official video billed as Soca 2026, according to YouTube.
On stage, Coutain has opened for Kes the Band's Roots, Rock, Soca Tour. Awards recognition followed. He earned three nominations at the 2026 Caribbean Music Awards, including best new soca artist.
For fans, this means a wider window on an artist building steadily. His Spotify page lists 141,700 monthly listeners, with 'Wedding Band' at 1,824,758 streams, according to Spotify. No album date has been confirmed. The numbers so far point to a singer carrying Sangre Grande with him as the audience grows.
