Teofimo Lopez has been ordered to defend his WBA world title against Jack Catterall.

The order, confirmed on 22 September, names Catterall as the mandatory challenger. That is the fighter a sanctioning body says the champion must face next BBC.

The two camps have until 22 October to reach an agreement. If they cannot, the WBA will call a purse bid. That is an auction where promoters bid for the right to stage the fight.

Lopez holds the WBA 'super' title at welterweight. The 'super' tag marks him as the organisation's recognised lead champion, above the secondary 'regular' belt. He won it with a points win over Rolando Romero, where the judges decide the winner on scorecards when there is no stoppage.

Catterall holds that 'regular' title and sits as the WBA's number one challenger. He earned the position by beating Shakhram Giyasov in May BBC.

It is a long-awaited second shot at the top for the Chorley man. His only previous world-title fight came in 2022, when he lost to Josh Taylor. Taylor was then the undisputed light-welterweight champion, meaning he held all four major sanctioning-body belts at once.

Catterall's record stands at 33 wins, 14 by stoppage, and two defeats. Those losses came against Taylor and Arnold Barboza Jr.

Lopez has known defeat too. He lost on points to George Kambosos Jr in 2021, a setback that still shapes how people judge him.

For fans, this means clarity. Styles will be picked apart in the build-up, but the core story is simple. A confident American champion. A patient British challenger who believes his moment was delayed, not denied.
