Man City fight back from 2-0 down to draw at Bayern

Manchester City came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 away to Bayern Munich in the Women's Champions League on 22 September.

The opening game of the league phase, the competition's group-style opening round, was played at Sportpark Unterhaching. It was the first meeting between the two clubs in the women's competition, according to FC Bayern.

Bayern started fast. Giulia Gwinn beat goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita after 11 minutes. Linda Dallmann made the pass.

The hosts were flying. They had won five from five in the Frauen-Bundesliga, Germany's top women's league, and sat two points clear at the top. Then they went 2-0 up when City defender Kerstin Casparij turned the ball into her own net.

City refused to fold. Just before half-time, Casparij drove down the right and Beth Mead tapped in. That changed everything.

Carlotta Wamser got City's second to complete the comeback. From 2-0 down to 2-2. No more goals, but no shortage of noise from the 4,291 in the ground, as reported by The Guardian.

Jose Barcala led Bayern for the tie. Andree Jeglertz led City. City were without Vivianne Miedema and Rebecca Knaak through injury.

City arrived as champions of the WSL, England's top women's league, after a 4-2 win over Liverpool. Bayern opened their European campaign at home. Kick-off was 6:45pm local time, 5:45pm in the UK.

What makes this stand out is the timing. An away point after that start takes calm heads. City found two goals when the night could have run away from them.
