George Lucas had three more Star Wars movies in him when he stopped directing.

The creator of Star Wars said he stepped back after finishing Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith with those ideas still unmade, according to Variety. He gave the account in an interview with Norah O'Donnell on CBS Sunday Morning. The conversation looked back over his career and ahead to the opening of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles.

Lucas said he retired from making movies because he was running out of time, according to Variety. He wanted to put that remaining time into building the museum instead. He described directing, the job of guiding performances and the look of a film from script to shoot, as work he chose to leave behind.

His retirement from directing dates from Revenge of the Sith. That film closed the chapter. His final three films as a director were the prequel trilogy: The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.

O'Donnell spoke with both museum founders, Lucas and Mellody Hobson, for CBS News Sunday Morning, according to CBS News. Hobson is a businesswoman and the wife of Lucas. Lucas, 82, appeared with her to discuss the project, according to ComicBook.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is built around illustration and stories told in pictures. It draws together work first seen in magazines, comics, fantasy stories and motion picture design. At its centre is illustrator art that tells mythic narratives and stories of shared humanity, according to CBS News. In plain terms, it treats popular pictures with the same care a gallery gives to paintings.

What makes this stand out is the size of the trade. Three films would be a full slate for most directors. For fans, this means the ending was not about one film doing well or badly. Lucas described a personal limit on time, and a second project he wanted to finish while he could. The museum, not another shoot, is where he put those years.
