Mahershala Ali says he still has no answer for why Marvel's Blade never reached cameras.

"That's a Kevin Feige question," the actor told GQ in an interview published on 22 September 2026, pointing to the head of Marvel Studios, according to Deadline. It is seven years since Marvel announced Ali as its new vampire hunter, a monster fighter first played on screen by Wesley Snipes.

Ali said Feige had described the stalled project as the biggest failure of his career. Ali agreed 100%.

Feige had already used stark language himself. In July 2026, he told the Happy Sad Confused podcast he felt like "a gigantic loser and failure" for not getting a Blade film off the ground with Ali, Deadline reported.

The reboot, a fresh start for the character inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the linked series of Marvel films and shows, was confirmed at Comic-Con in San Diego in 2019. Comic-Con is the large fan gathering where studios often reveal future plans.

The project then lost momentum. Directors Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange both left at different stages. Production was also delayed in part by the 2023 walkout by Hollywood writers, a labour stoppage that shut down writing work across the industry.

Feige said in a 2025 press sit-down that Marvel had not felt confident it could make the script great through shooting and did not want to put Ali in that position.

For Ali, the wait had a personal cost. He said he spent a year training for the physical role until he blew out his knee. He also moved his family to Atlanta, where Marvel makes many of its productions, only for filming to keep being pushed back.

What makes this stand out is how Ali now frames that long delay. He called the collapse of Blade "a blessing in disguise" because it forced him to stop waiting for the golden ticket and start building his own path.

That path includes Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, a film he made with Tariq that screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. Toronto is a major autumn festival where film-makers launch awards-season titles and buyers pick up new work.

For fans, the wait has been long. At D23 Brazil in 2024, Feige told the outlet Omelete that Marvel remained committed to Blade and loved Ali's take on the character, as noted in earlier Variety reporting. GQ also reported in July 2025 that Feige said the reboot was still on its way with Ali attached. Neither Marvel nor Ali has announced a new production date.
