Christie's will hold its first fine art auction in Abu Dhabi on 1 November 2026. ARTnews reported the plan on 22 September.

The sale is titled MAWASIM: 20 Years of Modern and Contemporary Middle Eastern Art, Christie's, the London-based auction house, said in a press statement. Christie's It will be a live auction, with bids taken in the room, by phone and online. The venue is The Abu Dhabi EDITION, a hotel in the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

More than 70 works will be offered. They are by artists from across the Middle East and North Africa, The National reported. Modern here means largely 20th-century work. Contemporary means recent work, often by living artists.

For a general reader, that is a wide net. It spans different countries, languages and generations. Fine art in this context covers categories such as painting, sculpture and works on paper sold to the highest bidder.

The date is set for a reason. The sale follows 20 years after Christie's inaugural sale in the United Arab Emirates in 2006. The house said that debut made it the first international auction house to hold a sale in the region.

That history matters for buyers. Provenance, the documented chain of ownership, and past sale results help bidders check a work before they raise a paddle. Twenty years of regional sales builds that paper trail.

Christie's has placed the Abu Dhabi sale just before two other firsts. It will take place ahead of the inaugural Frieze Abu Dhabi, the art fair organised by the London-based Frieze group where galleries sell to collectors and museums. It will also precede the opening of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, the planned museum on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi.

Rival house Sotheby's, based in New York, is also building links to the city. It closed a US$1 billion investment deal with Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund, a state-owned investment vehicle, Observer reported in 2024. Auction houses follow collectors, museums and funding.

What makes this stand out is the calendar. Auctions, fairs and museum openings rarely land together. For anyone following on a phone, that cluster means more public previews, more published prices and more chances to see the work in person.
