Craig Bellamy says Lewis Koumas is going to be a really important player for Wales for a number of years.

The Wales boss gave his backing to the 21-year-old Liverpool forward ahead of a demanding Nations League run against Portugal, Denmark and Norway, according to BBC Sport. It is a clear show of faith in a young attacker who is just starting to force his way into the first-team picture at club level.

Wales will meet those three nations in League A, the top tier of the Nations League, a European competition played in groups between major tournaments. Bellamy has named a 28-player squad for the opening matches, as confirmed by the Football Association of Wales. Koumas is part of a group being asked to compete straight away against elite opposition.

He has waited for this. Koumas made his Premier League debut in August 2026 under Andoni Iraola, Liverpool's new boss. Early in the 2026-27 season he came off the bench against Newcastle United, Ipswich Town and Atletico Madrid, showing the drive and intensity that had marked his pre-season.

His standout night came in the Carabao Cup, England's secondary knockout cup competition. Koumas was voted Liverpool's Player of the Match in the third-round win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, an award confirmed by Liverpool FC. For a young forward, that kind of home performance matters. It gives supporters a name and a face to remember.

The surname will already be familiar to Wales fans. His father is former Wales international Jason Koumas, who won 34 caps, a term for international appearances, and scored 10 goals. Jason Koumas played for Tranmere Rovers, West Bromwich Albion, Cardiff City and Wigan Athletic, and played alongside the likes of Danny Gabbidon for Wales. As a nine-year-old, he was even a team-mate of Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen.

Lewis has taken a different route to the same stage. He has been with Liverpool since primary school age, joining the academy from Tranmere Rovers at under-11 level and working his way through the youth teams. At 16 he was moved from midfield into a forward role, a switch that helped unlock his eye for goal.

Jurgen Klopp gave him his senior debut. He scored against Southampton in the FA Cup in February 2024, then was an unused substitute when Liverpool beat Chelsea to win the League Cup at Wembley. Former Liverpool Under-21 head coach Barry Lewtas described him as "a coach's dream", a reflection of his work rate as much as his talent.

What makes this stand out is the timing. Liverpool are managing a young player with deep roots at the club, while Wales see someone who could shape their attack for the next decade. For fans, this means a simple pleasure: watching a 21-year-old try to turn promise into something regular, for club and country at once.
