Juan Vaca, the story director on Gears of War: E-Day, has been laid off about a week before the game reaches players.

Vaca was cut as part of Microsoft's Xbox "reset" layoffs, according to GameSpot. More than 260 roles were affected in that round of cuts. The timing lands close to release. Early access, a paid early play period before general sale, begins on 1 October 2026. Full launch follows on 6 October 2026.

The timing is stark. Vaca had posted days earlier to celebrate E-Day going gold, the industry term for a finished master version ready for release and download. He was laid off four days after that post, according to Kotaku. Pre-install, the option to download the game before it unlocks, has already begun.

Vaca had worked at E-Day developer The Coalition for over four years as story director, the lead for plot, dialogue and cinematics. His earlier credits include an internship at Marvel Studios and work as a narrative designer at Telltale Games. He also spent three years at Netflix.

He was not the only senior narrative developer affected. Halo Studios cinematic director Josh Daniels was laid off a day after receiving a promotion.

E-Day is the next entry in the long-running Gears of War shooter series from Xbox. It will be available on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. It will be included day one with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, Microsoft's games subscription services, from 6 October 2026, according to Xbox. The listing also notes support for 4K Ultra HD, HDR and 60 frames per second. A Collector's Edition is set for release on 1 October 2026. Pre-orders offered early access to an open beta starting on 6 August.

What makes this stand out is the closeness to launch. Story work is usually finalised months before release. A departure at this stage does not change the shipped game. It leaves the person who led that work without a credit-period role at the finish line.
