LA28 reveals Venice Beach triathlon courses for first medals

The first medals of the Los Angeles Olympics will be won in the surf at Venice Beach.
The women's individual triathlon opens the medals table on 15 July 2028, a Saturday and the day after the Opening Ceremony. The men's individual race follows on 16 July, with the mixed relay on 20 July, according to details unveiled by LA28 organisers on 23 September 2026 The Guardian.
Triathlon is swim, then bike, then run, raced back to back against the clock. In Los Angeles the Olympic distance is the classic test: a 1,500-metre swim, a 40km bike ride and a 10km run.
The start will be pure California. Athletes will sprint from the sand straight into the Pacific Ocean. It is only the second beach start in Olympic triathlon history after Rio 2016 at Copacabana Beach.
The swim rewards those who can breathe in chaos. It is run over two laps. Athletes swim a 1,000-metre circuit, climb out for a short 25-metre dash along the beach, then dive back in for a second 500-metre swim before running to the changeover zone.
That changeover zone, known as transition, sits where Venice Boulevard meets the sand. Bikes and running shoes will be racked there. The finish line will overlook the Pacific in the same area.
The bike leg is built for speed and crowds. It is eight flat 5km laps along the Venice bike path and surrounding streets. Expect tight packs, loud corners and constant jostling for position.
Then comes the run. It is four 2.5km laps totalling 10km, crossing bridges over the Venice Canals. Four laps means four chances for the crowd to lift a fading runner. It also means nowhere to hide.
The men's race uses the same individual course a day later. The mixed relay is shorter and sharper. Each of the four team members — typically two women and two men — completes a 350-metre swim, a 6.6km bike ride and a 1.6km run before tagging the next athlete LA28.
The Paralympic triathlon will look different. It starts from a barge beyond the breakwater, where the water is calmer, with a 750-metre swim followed by a 20km bike leg and a 5km run. Racing is scheduled across 18 and 19 August.
Venice Beach will be busy beyond triathlon. It will also host the starts of the Olympic marathon and cycling road races and the Paralympic marathon.
The courses will get a full dress rehearsal first. A World Triathlon T50 Triathlon World Tour event is planned for Venice on 16-18 July 2027, almost exactly a year out from the Games.
What makes this stand out is the proximity. Fans on the sand will hear the breathing before they see the leaders. For athletes chasing that first gold of LA28, the race will be won by whoever handles the surf, the laps and the noise best.
