The Testaments has added Deborah Ann Woll and Luke Kirby to its second season.

Woll joins as a recurring guest star, meaning she appears in multiple episodes without joining the main cast, playing Sylvia. Kirby joins as a guest star, meaning a shorter credited appearance, playing Commander Fletcher, according to Deadline.

Sylvia works as a seamstress in close contact with the Wives and daughters of Gilead's Commanders. That places her near the centre of power in Gilead, the fictional theocratic state at the heart of the story. Commander Fletcher is described as a literal-minded recluse living on a farm in one of Gilead's Colonies, whose eccentricities made it hard for him to find a wife.

Two other casting moves shape Season 2. Charlie Carrick, who plays Commander Judd, has been upped to series regular, meaning a full-time member of the main cast. Haley Wong has also joined as a series regular playing Prudence, a dutiful and pregnant wife.

The Testaments is the follow-up series to Hulu's adaptation of The Handmaid's Tale. It is based on Margaret Atwood's 2019 novel of the same name. Chase Infiniti stars as Agnes and Lucy Halliday stars as Daisy, while Ann Dowd reprises her Handmaid's Tale role as Aunt Lydia.

The series was created by showrunner Bruce Miller, the writer-producer in overall charge of the show. It is produced by MGM Television and 20th Television, according to Deadline.

For viewers, this means Season 2 will open up new corners of Gilead. One story thread sits with the ruling families, the other out on a remote farm.

Season 1 premiered in April. Production on Season 2 commenced in August.
