Nick Kelly out as Leicestershire face relegation decider

Leicestershire must save their place in Division One without Nick Kelly.
The 33-year-old batter has been ruled out of the final County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston with a rib injury, BBC Sport reported. It is a must-win game for Leicestershire, who are fighting to avoid relegation from the top tier of England's four-day domestic competition.
Leicestershire confirmed the news in their match preview for the game starting on 24 September 2026. The club said the rib problem, picked up during his match-winning innings against Hampshire, has worsened, according to Leicestershire CCC.
Kelly hurt himself in last week's victory over Hampshire. He still finished with 86, the top score in the second innings, as Leicestershire chased 334 to keep their survival hopes alive. That defeat confirmed Hampshire's relegation from Division One.
Remarkably, Kelly then played through the injury in the One-Day Cup final at Trent Bridge. That is the showpiece decider of England's 50-over county competition. He top-scored with 103 for Leicestershire, but Middlesex still won by 31 runs, ESPNcricinfo reported.
Middlesex's win ended a 36-year wait for a List A trophy, the name given to official limited-overs titles. Their victory was built around a hundred from Higgins, which proved just enough to hold off Kelly's lone charge.
What makes this stand out is the timing. Kelly has made runs when Leicestershire needed them most. Losing an in-form batter for a straight shootout at Edgbaston leaves a gap at the top of the order. For fans, this means the survival fight just got harder.
