It is a striking turnaround. Warwickshire won only two of their first eight games this season. They have since won four of their last five, including two-day victories over Essex and Glamorgan.
They moved to the top by hammering Essex by eight wickets inside two days in the penultimate round. BBC Sport Warwickshire bowled Essex out for 134 in that match, a ruthless display that flipped a tight three-team race. Two rounds earlier, Somerset, Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire had been separated by only five points.
The bowling has driven the charge. Ethan Bamber leads the wicket charts for the club with 60 for the season. Olly Hannon-Dalby tops the averages with 27 wickets at 18, despite spending the first four games of the season on loan at Worcestershire.
Hannon-Dalby has chipped in with the bat too. He hung around for nearly an hour alongside Sam Hain while Hain made 88 not out to secure a first-innings lead of 57 in a key recent game. The Guardian Number 11s do not usually shape title races. That stand did.
Warwickshire last won the Championship in 2021. Hannon-Dalby told the Guardian at Edgbaston that the squad now have destiny in their hands going into the last game.
What makes this stand out is how little margin for drift remains. A win settles everything. A draw leaves Warwickshire hunting those bonus points ball by ball.
