Tunisian Flotilla Organizer Hospitalized After 39-Day Hunger Strike

Wael Naouar was admitted to hospital in Tunisia on September 23, 2026, on day 39 of a hunger strike against his continued detention. The Gaza Sumud Flotilla organisation reported the transfer as his condition deteriorated in detention.
Bassem Trifi, head of the Tunisian League for the Defence of Human Rights (LTDH), said on September 23 that Naouar was in very critical condition and on the verge of death. His lawyer said he had lost more than 20kg (44lb) and suffered pain throughout his body. Ghassen Bouaazi of the National Committee for the Defence of Sumud Flotilla Activists said Naouar had repeated fainting, difficulty breathing and hallucinations. Al Jazeera
Naouar is a Steering Committee member of the Global Sumud Flotilla. He began the hunger strike on August 16 after nearly six months in pre-trial detention, meaning jail while an investigation continues and before any trial or conviction. The Global Sumud Flotilla said denial of prompt, specialised medical care placed his life at immediate risk. After 37 days inside Mornaguia Prison in Tunis, it said he faced imminent organ failure. By September 23, it said he had entered a semi-comatose state and that it holds Tunisian authorities fully liable for the fate of the imprisoned hunger strikers. Global Sumud Flotilla
He was detained with three other organizers on charges of money laundering and misuse of donated funds. The four, identified as Naouar, Ghassen Henchiri, Ghassen Boughdiri and Nabil Channoufi, were arrested in March over accusations of misusing money raised for the Global Sumud Flotilla. None has been convicted. They remain under investigation over alleged suspicious financial flows and remain in pre-trial detention. U.S. News
Naouar demanded that Tunisian authorities drop the financial misconduct charges against him and the three others. A judge rejected the appeal against extending pre-trial detention for the four, known as the Sumud 4, according to a Gaza Sumud Flotilla statement. The four had been due to appear in court on September 16, 2026.
The protest has spread inside the prison. Nabil Channoufi, Ghassen Henchiri and Ghassen Boughdiri joined Naouar in an open-ended hunger strike on September 10. All four organizers are now on hunger strike inside Mornaguia Prison in Tunis. Trifi said Naouar remains determined to continue despite his health. Outside prison, Naouar's father Hichen Naouar, aged 72, began a hunger strike on August 28 in solidarity with his son. At least 11 people were arrested in Tunisia after joining a protest in September 2026 that demanded release of the jailed activists.
The broader context here is the collision between a transnational solidarity campaign and domestic criminal procedure. Pre-trial detention, extended by judicial order and open to appeal, is a normal tool in financial investigations. When it lasts six months for well-known figures, it creates a second contest outside the courtroom. A hunger strike shifts pressure from legal papers to bodily risk, like moving the argument from filings to physical endurance. That explains why medical updates, liability statements and solidarity strikes now carry as much weight as the financial claims. What to watch is whether the cycle around the September 16 court date brings a formal indictment, release pending investigation, or further extensions, and whether prison medical care can keep the three later strikers from following the same path to hospitalization.
