The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles has acquired a rediscovered Portrait of the Count-Duke of Olivares, newly attributed to Diego Velázquez.

The news was reported on 23 September 2026. The work is a 17th-century painting, according to mynewsLA, and the Getty identifies its subject as the Count-Duke of Olivares.

Attribution, the scholarly judgment about who painted a work, is central here. The portrait is described as newly attributed to Velázquez, ARTnews reported, which in plain language means researchers have recently concluded the picture is by his hand.

The trail is short. A private collector acquired the painting from the Coppellotti family in 2025, then sold it on to the Getty, according to Hoodline. Provenance, the documented chain of ownership, therefore moves in two steps from family ownership through private hands to the museum.

The Getty said the portrait strengthens its collection of 17th-century European paintings, according to its announcement, Getty. The museum, based at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, collects European painting, sculpture and drawings alongside photographs and manuscripts.

What makes this stand out is the rediscovery itself. Paintings can sit for decades under another name or in storage before cleaning, research and comparison bring a new conclusion. For visitors, this means a work that passed through private ownership is now in a public collection.

No purchase price or display date was disclosed in the published accounts. The museum has not detailed further research plans in the materials released so far.
