Tasmania wants its footy song to carry two voices.

The Devils want both female and male voices on the official recording of their team song, which would be an AFL first, The Guardian reported on 24 September 2026.

A team song is the tune players belt out in the rooms after a win. Every club has one. None has released an official version sung by both men and women.

The song is expected to be selected by the end of 2026. An eight-person panel had met three times as of September 2026 to write the selection criteria, which are due for release in October.

The panel includes Caroline Sharpen, chief executive of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. The club named the group in July to decide the theme song, with two high-profile athletes alongside music experts, according to AFL.com.au.

The brief is simple and tough. The melody must sound equally good sung by AFL players, AFLW players or supporters in the stands. The lyrics must be inclusive of all Tasmanians.

Meghan Gaffney, the Devils' VFLW captain, is part of the conversation around the new club. Gaffney spent four years at GWS in the AFLW, the national women's competition, before leading Tasmania's state-league women's side.

What makes this stand out is the practical test. A song that sits too low suits big male voices and leaves others straining. Too high and it flips. The Devils want one tune that works for everyone who will ever sing it.
